TransFix/EDTA Vacuum Blood Collection Tubes (TVTs) are plastic, direct draw collection tubes used to stabilise venous blood at the point of collection and preserve whole blood specimens for immunophenotyping by flow cytometry. TVTs are prefilled with sufficient TransFix containing K3EDTA for the immediate anticoagulation and stabilisation of 3ml or 9ml of blood for up to 14 days.
All TVT are CE marked for IVD use in Europe and 3ml versions are available for IVD use in the USA.
Features of TVTs
- Preserve the cell surface antigens of lymphocyte subsets for up to 14 days.
- Prefilled with sufficient TransFix and K3EDTA to stabilise and anticoagulate a final draw volume of 3ml or 9ml of blood.
- Multiple pack sizes available.
- Immediate stabilisation providing optimal sample stability.
- Ease of application: TransFix/EDTA Vacuum Blood Collection Tubes fit docking sheaths from most manufacturers.
- Sterilised by gamma radiation.
Benefits of TVTs
- Reduced variability:
- Ensures sample integrity during transportation between testing sites.
- Reduction in pre-analysis variability – all samples preserved at the same time point.
- Reduces the impact of unexpected delays in analysis
- Convenience:
- Easy to use – directly collect blood into TransFix then just mix by inversion.
- Minimal “hands-on” time at collection sites
- Reduced cost:
- Greater efficiency in testing – allows for batching of samples prior to testing.
- Prevent the need for repeat phlebotomy due to degraded samples.
- Further tests can be performed on the same sample after the initial analysis, without subject recall.

WHITE PAPER: Freezing Blood Samples for Deferred Immunophenotyping
This study used the TVTs and BCTs to compare the immunophenotype of fixed peripheral whole blood samples at time zero, and after freezing at -80°C for 7 days. The structural integrity of the frozen TVTs and BCTs were also examined. Optimisation of storage conditions was further investigated to improve immunophenotyping after freezing. TVTs showed the best cell percentage differences from the control with average lymphocyte cell recovery of 77% compared to 26% for the BCTs. All three BCTs cracked during the freezing process while all of the TVTs remained intact. Storage optimisation experiments showed tubes frozen at an angle and thawed at 37°C performed best overall. These results raise the possibility that whole blood samples for immunophenotyping may be stored at -80°C for extended periods beyond 7 days. Further studies will aim to demonstrate the upper limit of time the sample will remain stable and suitable for immunophenotyping. Experiments will also be conducted to examine the suitability for use in phosphoflow assays. Material Safety Data Sheets
